Hi all

Can you remeber your first time in Bulgaria, When was it and where did you stay?
What changes have you seen over the years?
Has the changes over the years made it better or not?
How many Levs did you get for the pound the first time you went?

Tell us what you think.

Bigyin

Hi bigyin
First time was in 1999.We arrived early hours of the morning and got a bit of a shock cos most things were closed..we later found out it was changeover day (which was sunday)so most people were either arriving or leaving.
Anyway we dropped off at our hotel, which was the Saturn...the Barcelo is there in its place now.Could not believe how old fashioned the rooms were..60s style sofa, curtains and carpets to match(relly awful orange and brown striped material). The rooms were so small we had to step back as only one at a time could pass end of beds.Remember we hired a fan from photo shop next door..cos it was so hot..and then went and hired another cos it was still too hot.By the next evening it was bustling and we fell in love with the place completely, and decided on that first night that we would return the year after..10 years on stil going.
It has changed quite a lot..definitely more bars and nice big hotels..but preffered the old Sunny Beach.
We were getting 3 levs to the pound and remember the cigs were 8.6 lev for 200 ..which was less than 30p a pack

Oh happy days..could rabbit on all day Very Happy

Hi Bigyin , my first time was to st.konstantin , we flew on an old aeroflot , i loved it , there was a big lightning storm at varna , we got off and it was so humid i could not get breath. Thought i was going to die first day but i survived ,that was 2002 and now going this year for the 5th time . The leva was about 2.80 to the pound , but like you say i go there as i like it , i would still go if it was on par for eating and drinking with england .
Oh happy days..could rabbit on all day Very Happy .Me to CG

First time in late 1980's to Albena. Then you were given food vouvhers which you could use for food and drink in any restaurant in the resort, it was difficult to sepnd leva as we even got these as change. 3 leva to pound but on black market we were getting 12! Only problem couldn't ake it out of country and needed pink slips to prove you had changed some so we got some officially. Problem was nothing to spend leva on as most shops were so bare with one light bulb in shop. But the people were so friendly and it helped to speak German as thery were not geared up for British1
Returned again 5 years ago to SB and love the place so can't wait to go back on Sunday to seee all friends we have made there.

Well mines was in 2001 and got a late deal for SB staying at the Saturn hotel.
When the travel agent offered me this i thought where is bulgaria (was not very good at geography at school).
I decided to give it a go and loved it from day one, her indoors liked it also but wants a change this year, so of to Majorca Sad.
Already looking at the new Balkan brochure for next year and getting ready to book.
There were no shops on the beach front just a couple of hotels and beach bars.
Exchage was 3 levs to the pound if you did a deal with your hotel waiter or 2.80 at the exchange booths.
Have tried both SB and Golden Sands and prefer SB.
Oh boy i am going to miss it this year Crying

Bigyin

I remember we did money exchange with waiter in Saturn.
He would come to our table at breakfast and say "you wanna change money"and away he would go ...come back with the lev and shove it under sugar bowl.
It was all very nod nod wink wink..i had never encountered anything like it before and i thought it was hilarious...very tongue in cheek Very Happy

Four of us first went to Golden Sands in 1993. Hotels were mainly old eastern bloc kinda style. Theres still a few left in Golden Sands.

First flight of the season early in May and the resort was deserted. We should have been in the Chucouliga Hotel (now the Primasol) but without warning Balkan put us in the Zlatna Kotva on the beachfront (because there was so few people and it made sense to fill one hotel). Every couple of days a few more restaurants/bars opened and we thoroughly enjoyed our visit so much so we went back the next year and another 8 times.

Four of us (adults) used to eat out in the evening, 3 courses and maybe 2 rounds of drinks, and had change of £10. Hardly any choice, for example, if you all wanted chicken it would be doubtful there would be enough for 4 and usually 2 would pick another dish. If we wanted pizza at lunch time you would have to buy a token each and the pizza would come off a conveyor belt.

Only 2 hotels then had swimming pools but we used the Havana "public" outdoor pool which is still open in Golden Sands or we used to go to the indoor one at the Ambassador for a very very snmall fee.

When we booked with Balkan we were given some vouchers as an incentive for booking and these could be used for things in the resort, e.g. strange little deck chairs on the beach.

The changes now are just amazing. We still love Bulgaria but remember our early visits with fondness.

We too stayed at Zlatna Kotva on our first visit in 2002. I see they have knocked in down over the winter season and have built brand new apartments instead.

I first went to Bulgaria in 1992..We stayed in Sunny Beach at the Globus Hotel.
I can't remember what the exchange rate was (I thought it was something really silly like 42 Lev but after reading other posts I know I'm well wrong) but I can remember everything being sooooooooo very cheap... In them days you could get bladdered for a £1 Very Happy I drank vodka then & I was amazed when I ordered my first one at the hotel... I got a glass full of vodka a tin of sprite and an empty glass
Booze Very Happy
One episode that I will never be allowed to forget was causing pandamonium in a restaurant (I think it was called Neptunes)I had forgoten that Piriton don't mix with alcohol which resulted in me passing out and sending some poor sod head first into their dinner!!!!
Apart from that incident it was one of the best holidays I have ever had.
We also went to Golden Sands in 2002 and stayed at the Astoria Palace...This was our first holiday with our daughter who had just turned 3 and like paulines daughter she is very blond and the locals really adored her and kept picking hep up for cuddles and kisses and giving her little presents.
2 great places and 2 great holiday's & I am so so excited to be going back again this year Very Happy Very Happy.
Lets hope I'm not disapointed Wink
Cheers
Meg x x

Yes I noticed and the Hotel Sirena next door is now apartments.

Also remember the little old ladies in the toilets handing out a piece of toilet paper and pointing to the plate for the money. When you came out of the toilet they would whisper in your ear, "English money, I change for you.

I remember eating in the old casino and the free floor shows were superb. Its now the 5* Grand Hermitage Hotel.

Have been to Sunny Beach a few times and thoroughly enjoyed it but think Golden Sands is a much nicer resort.

YES I agree, Sunny Beach is huge and the building work just goes on and on. As I said though I did like the holidays very much that I spent in SB though last year was slightly disappointing with us opting for "all inclusive". Wouldnt do that again as it didnt work out too well for us.

Golden Sands still had the horse and carriages when we stayed in Marina Grand 2 years ago though cant say I noticed "Dracula". The only reason we are not returning to GS this summer is because we cant fly into Varna and dont want to do the journey from Bourgas.

Pauline we were there too in July 2006 staying at Marina Grand and the horse/carts were still there though I have a feeling (if my memory serves me right) they werent allowed to wait at the square outside Admiral. Hope I'm not misinforming yoon this one.

Would love to be going back to Golden Sands this year but have opted for Marmaris instead. I really hope that they have flights from Scotland flying into Varna again and I most certainly will book.

Where are you staying in GS?

Pauline - know all these hotels that you mention.

Sure you will love the Nympha which has a lovely location. Havent stayed there but when in Marina Grand it wasnt far to walk to Nympha so we strolled along had lunch there and spent an afternoon on the beach. It was very peaceful. Apart from Zlatna Kotva and Marina Grand we have also stayed in Sirena, Madara, and the Glarus and enjoyed each and every one of them.

Sure the all incl. will work out well for you. Re the hotel we were in last year (Sun Palace) Sunny Beach - it was their first year at AI and they got lots of things wrong
resulting in loads of complaints from the tourists.

Didnt put me off Bulgaria tho, I will without any doubt
return.

well

we have only been the once in 2oo4
We really enjoyed it found SB very welcoming !!!
We stayed at the flower house apartments to the very North of the resort which meant a good 25 min walk into the centre, we did regret not staying nearer the centre but hey we didnt get down about it !!

Taxis where cheap enough back home, William was 0nly just 3 at the time and he had the time of his life !! made lots of little friends who he still keeps in touch with now !!

We also made many a friend especially our friends we made who are from Middlesboro, still in touch with them now !

We found the Bulgarian locals the happiest, friedliest hosts we could ever meet and a few tears where shed when it was time to leave !!

We will go back one day, but money is so very tight at the moment, i just hope it hasnt changed too much when we do .

Anyway you lucky lucky lot, heres to your hols and hope to get back there in the near future !!

We were late starters as our first visit was in 2005. We stayed at the Saturn and, reading Candy Girl's post, I believe the carpets were the same! Made a great friend in Evo the barman - top bloke!

We didn't go in 2006 - we opted for an October break in Zante but I really missed not going to SB.

Last year we went back and stayed in the Golden Dreams apartments - fabulous rooms there! Plenty of space! Made loads of friends! Our eldest didn't come with us as she was doing the Magaluf thing with her pals!

This year we have booked the Excelsior apartments - roll on 7th July! Both our daughters are coming this time, also my sis-in-law and her 8 year old.

We're really looking forward to visiting friends we have made over there, the friendly locals who can't do enough for you, the beautiful beaches, the warm sea (which, incidentally, clears my youngest's skin up. She has excema which can be really bad at times, but after a couple of days in the sea it clears up).

The only thing I won't be doing is eating off a stall. I got a chicken kebab last year and was bad for two days!!!!

Mel Very Happy

1987 for us, as Caz says the meal vouchers you got, in a way this might have been one of the first All inclusive type holidays as you could by drink and food with those vouchers.
the lev was virtually immpossible to spend though you could spend sterling/dollars/deuchmarks etc in the CORECOM shops which sold western brands of good which were a godsend.
you couldn't buy things we take for granted now, eg. if you wanted a mixer for vodka sometimes the choice of soft drinks was apple juice or strawberry juice.
we stayed in the Saturn hotel, one of the top hotels at the time.
the other top hotels were Europa, Bourgas, globus,Kuban etc. and there was only one swimming pool in the whole resort.
AAhh happy days.
John S.
