Having caught up with all your posts and reading about some pretty serious happenings recently in Sunny Beach can I offer some advice on how to stay safe this year.

Having visited Bulgaria both Summer and Winter nearly 30 times I have seen the resorts grow beyond comprehension and with that comes the influx of the undesirables that we would all prefer not to see. However they are there, and no amount of 'blind eye' can alter that fact. Apart from 1 instance (which was probably my own fault for getting involved) I have been fortunate enough to avoid any confrontation in Bulgaria and have always come home having had a wonderful time.

But these would be my recommendations on what to avoid whilst there.

Confrontation is often the biggest spark that can lead to problems so avoid it wherever possible. Just walk away if you feel threatened or uncomfortable. This can easily stop any further aggro before it begins.

For example - whenever you wish to use a taxi, ALWAYS agree the price with the driver before you enter the cab. If the driver says it is charged by the meter then walk away, because most taxi drivers will give you a fixed rate for your journey rather than charge you an extortionate amount at your journeys end.

Much has been written about changing money and there are some simple guidelines to follow here. All around the resort you will see money changing booths. Some will offer a fantastic rate of exchange, but what you will not see is the small print that states that rate only applies when changing several hundreds of pounds at a time. What you will get is a rate well below the advertised rate and the armed security guard who stands outside is not there to protect you, but to protect the cashier from your anger.
The same applies to the people on the street who will ask if you wish to change money. Just say a polite 'no thanks' and keep walking. If you change money with these people you will be given old, worthless money in exchange so just don't do it.

Instead, change your money at either your hotel reception, any high street bank or at the money booths that display the Crown emblem. These are state owned and are perfectly safe to use and they will give you the advertised exchange rate which is always competitive.

Avoid going onto the beach late at night as this is where many of the 'ladies of the night' take their clients and there are all sorts of thing going on that is best to avoid.

By all means get merry and have a great time, but by staggering home late at night alone is just asking for trouble. So try and stay with your crowd and don't be the one to act the idiot and attract attention.

The huge majority of Bulgarian folk are quite simply lovely people, and will steal your heart away - I wouldn't be going back for the 27th time if they were anything different and I hold no fears whatsoever for my well-being.

I cannot guarantee your safety but I can say if you follow what I have written above then you should have a wonderful time without any reason not to return year after year.

Many have said in the past that I work for the Bulgarian Tourist Board or I have a vested interest in Bulgaria - which is absolutely rubbish. I am just the same as many other people who just happen to love Bulgaria. I have no property or business links in Bulgaria nor do I receive a single penny from monitoring this site - I just do it because I love doing it.

Sincerely hope you all have a wonderful time in this wonderful place.

And for those who may have already experienced an unfortunate situation this year, I am really really sorry for you, but please realise that it was probably just 1 or 2 nasty people who ruined it for you - not an entire nation.

Hubby had his passport stolen a couple of years ago on SB Nessebar bus,our stupidity, didn't stop us returning . Lots of thefts when we were in Accopulco and Cancun, & rip offs wherever you go, plenty in this country I'm sure. Just got back last week , hope to go again in Sept.
Got this post back on top. !!
