Bulgaria in EU

On January,1st 2007 at 01 o’clock local time and 00 o’clock Brussels time Bulgaria officially became a full member of the European Union. This marked the end of the fifth round of enlargement of the EU and the new beginning for the new coming country. The affiliate of Bulgaria in the EU was accompanied with spectacular celebrations. The traditional New Year concert at “Batenberg” square was completed by unique lightning show, created by the stage designer Germ Hoff. Right at midnight, when the New Year sent of the past one, the marvelous colorful rays connected Sofia with Bucharest and Brussels by implication. The official celebrations went on during the day. In front of the monument of the Unknown Soldier at “St. Alexander Nevski” square the Bulgarian and European flags were raised in state. The president of Bulgaria Georgi Parvanov, the Prime – Minister Sergei Stanishev and other representatives of the Bulgarian government were at the event. The chairman of the European parliament Jose Manuel Barroso and the Euro commissar Oli Ren were among the official guests. Hundreds of Romanians and Bulgarians crossed the “Danube Bridge” to visit the neighbor country. This was the way that the municipality of the two new European countries, Rouse and Giurgevo, marked their membership in EU. There was free bus transport for everyone who wanted to step on the other side of the river and to see the neighbor town. The custom officers at the boundary near Silistra putted away the custom barrier formally at the frontier post. Its destiny was followed by the barrier at the frontier post “Kulata” at the Greece boundary. On the 2 of January a concert of Church - Slavonic chant took place in Balanova house in Plovdiv and a ski run competition took place in Sofia on a specially designed artificial piste in the centre of the city in front of the palace.
