St. Ivan Island near Sozopol Becomes Attractive Tourist Destination

“St. Ivan” Island, which is located near Sozopol, will become a new attractive destination for domestic and foreign tourists. The project has been worked out by the Municipality of Sozopol, which, together with Sozopol Foundation and the Association of the young businessmen from Odrin apply for Transborder Cooperation PHARE program. Known for its Medieval Monastery complex, named “St. Ivan Precursor and Baptist” and notable for its unique beautiful nature, the island has been stated an archeological preserve and a protected area. Because of its rich natural resources and cultural and historical landmarks, the island has become an attractive spot for all nature lovers. Ecological paths and wooden shelters are being built now, in the green park areas, so that everybody can enjoy the fresh air and, the wild rabbits and the flying birds. The tourists will also have the chance to learn more on the history of the monastery complex, which back in the past used to hold a rich library with important literature and books. The visit to St. Ivan Island is planned to be part of a larger eco route with a starting point, leading from the Old town of Sozopol, through the South Stronghold Wall and Tower, the Ethnographic Museum and the antique Christianity complex. On sea, the tourist will be able to pass along “Skamnia” Cape, the smaller “St. Petar” Island, known as the Birds Island and the sunken islands of “Milos” and “Gata” in Sozopol Bay.
